The Niseko Rules were created to protect your freedom to ski on untouched snow and your life.
Niseko once had the highest number of fatal avalanche accidents in Japan. No one should lose their life for the sake of a joyful sport, like snowboarding and skiing. The Niseko Rules were established with that sole purpose in mind.
Fortunately, no one has died while following the Niseko Rules since its introduction. To continue preventing accidents, we kindly ask for your continuous cooperation.
Niseko respects the freedom to ski on fresh snow, while taking your safety as the priority. To ensure a safe skiing experience, please follow these rules:
< Supplementary Section >
・A minimum of ¥100,000 will be charged for search and rescue operations in backcountry areas.
・Rules violators may be banned from using the resort facilities by having their lift-pass confiscated and/or refused to reissue a new pass.
・Many past accidents have occurred during bad weather conditions. Always be cautious and never overestimate your self or equipment. Make sure to obey the ski patrol's instructions. Beware of crevasses and trees. Mountains are never 100% safe.
・The Niseko Avalanche Information is the area's official information. The hazard level is estimated using systems and methods developed by the Niseko Avalanche Institute.
・Carrying an avalanche beacon, a probe and a shovel is very highly recommended. This equipment may save not only your life but your buddy's too.

We are currently using 1.75 times more resources than the Earth can sustain. Let's take action today to build a future where our children can happily live in..
1. Use water wisely
Niseko Town's tap water is entirely self-supplied, with 96% being groundwater. The town is committed to using this natural resource carefully and efficiently.
In addition, transporting and heating water produces CO2 emissions. Saving water also helps reduce carbon footprint.
2. Choose reuse over single-use
As of 2022, major coffee chains in Japan are said to throw away around one million disposable cups every day.
These single-use items are made using precious resources but are quickly discarded. Even when traveling, consider bringing reusable items such as your own bags, handkerchiefs, bottles, and toothbrushes.
Small habits like these lead to wiser, more sustainable use of the planet's resources.
3. Turn off lights
In Niseko Town, we're working to reduce electricity use while making the most of renewable energy.
Our town hall runs on locally produced hydroelectric power, and we support efforts to decarbonise through subsidies for homes and businesses.
Even small actions like turning off lights when not in use, can help conserve energy and support a more sustainable future.
4. Take leftovers with you
Depending on the season and the type of food, some restaurants in Niseko Town offer the option for you to pack away any leftover food.
Feel free to use the doggy bags to take your unfinished meal with you.
